Photos never finishes scanning

My Photos library has had tens of thousands of photos scanned with "182 Photos Remaining" for ages. This goes across OS updates, app updates, Photos closed, Photos open, restarts, etc. I've also reset the library multiple times and it just gets stuck again. The only time the count decreases is when I get lucky and delete the "right" photo.

I also notice that the Library view will indefinitely loop on, "Analyzing Scenes, Detecting Duplicates, Curating Best Photos, Composing Layout, Gathering Favorites" if I'm viewing by Years, Months, or Days - but not All Photos.

How do I induce Photos to finish scanning and/or indicate to me what the problem photos are? Thanks!

You have to identify the "bad Apples" in your library, that cannot be processed by Photos and are causing the processes to waste time on trying to process them over and over again.

Have you checked below the "All Photos" album in the status bar, if there are items mentioned "On this Mac only" or "Unable to upload"? If yes, you can find these items with smart albums as described here: Check the status of your library in Photos for macOS - Apple Support

If the status bar does not show any special items, you are on your own.

Then you have to search systematically for videos or photos, that cannot be processed.

Which system version is running on your Mac? Starting with macOS 10.15 Catalina some image formats and video codecs are no longer supported by the newer system versions and older videos or image files in an unsupported format can cause photos to hang.

I would search systematically with smart albums for photos and videos in an unusual format by searching for the file name extension as described here: Script: Find Photos not in Any Album, for Photos 5 on Catalina

Then test the suspicious items by trying to import them into a new, empty library. Any item, that is giving an error message when trying to import it to a new, empty library needs to be converted to a more compatible format.

In addition to incompatible codecs the background processes could get stuck by photos with missing originals or damaged files or scanned or shared photos with incompatible color sync profiles embedded. Check any photo you downloaded from the web, if it is just a link and not a full image file.

As my library is an iCloud Photos Library and all photos are in iCloud, I am usually repairing it by downloading a fresh copy from iCloud to a new, empty library. This will ensure, that only photos compatible with the current system version will be downloaded from iCloud and my new library will usually be shipshape.

Hey there astrostl,

Thanks so much for using Apple Support Communities.

We want to help you get your library in Photos sorted out so that everything is able to finish scanning and updating. To do that, we want to recommend that you try and create a new library and see if the issue affects that new library as well as your original one. While this process should not affect your data, we always encourage that you create a backup anyway to avoid potential data loss. Here's how: Back up the library in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

When you're ready, this article will walk you through the steps to create a new library: Create additional photo libraries in Photos on Mac - Apple Support

You will just want to create a new library and test to see if your photos are able to finish syncing/scanning in that library. If they are, then you may want to delete the original library and continue using the new one. It may be possible that some sort of unusable data is causing the issue to only occur in your main library, which is why we like to try this step to isolate the issue.

We hope this does the trick for you!

Cheers.

Sorry, the link was wrong: I wanted to post this link:

How to Weed out Legacy Media in Photos for Mac - Apple Community

It is showing some samples for a smart album to find items, that might be in a legacy format and causing problems.

It would be very helpful, if Apple provided a too in Photos that lists the items that have not yet been uploaded to iCloud Photos. The "Unable to upload" rule is not sufficient, as it is only showing the items that have been confirmed as being unable to upload, but we need to know all the items that are waiting to be uploaded.

And the I am also missing the possibility to see a list of all items that have not yet been downloaded,

Local only, no iCloud/uploads. Currently on Ventura 13.4.1, but the issue goes back countless years. I examined that script, and I'm not sure it addresses my needs. It's checking for whether or not something is in an album (almost all of my photos aren't), and doesn't (yet?) implement error checking. Am I missing something with my assessment? My library has around 70,000 photos and 10,000 videos. Thanks!
