Mojave/High Sierra, Mail Services Withdrawn from Yahoo maybe other earlier OSX... "error in Internet Accounts preferences."

I have an early 2012 Mac Pro 5,1 on Mojave and other bootable drives with Mojave and High Sierra, 2011 MBP on HIgh Sierra, 2020 MBP on Ventura. I also have an iPad Pro iOS 16.5, iPhone iOS 16.5.

I've spent a few days now trying to figure out why I'm getting the "Preferences Error There was an error in Internet Accounts preferences." while trying to set up my e-mail account (System Preferences/Internet Accounts) in Mojave and High Sierra.

My Mac Mail app runs well and I have no issues with the Yahoo e-mail accounts that have been present for a long time. However, (and a big WARNING) you may not be able to log in again to your Yahoo e-mail accounts if you change your password while using Mojave or High Sierra. This behavior was present on my 2011 MBP with High Sierra, also on my 2012 (early) Mac Pro 5,1 while in different bootable drives (all of them) High Sierra and Mojave. All these OSX are in their latest update. It was a very interesting find when this issue was **NOT** present on my 2020 MBP using Ventura, and no issues on my iPad or iPhone on iOS 16.5.

As a matter of fact, Yahoo will not let you create a new e-mail account while in High Sierra or Mojave. I've done clean installs with Mojave on my Mac Pro 5,1 and the problem is still present, I've even re-flashed the Boot ROM Version 141.0.0.0.0 which is the latest for this machine, and the problem still lingers. However, Google gmail WILL let you create an account. I called Yahoo support on the telephone and all they could say is that they don't deal with third party mail apps... I stressed that my question was not about the app but about Yahoo policy on regards to phasing out older operating systems, to which he had no information or anything to say.

If you Google "There was an error in Internet Accounts preferences" you will get lots of returns with many suggestion on reseting plist files, moving folders around and all other sort of remedies... well, none of them work for me.

Yahoo's password generator gives a password when specifically requested for 'Mac Mail.' However, it is not recognized during the login process for the e-mail under Internet Accounts in System Preferences.

So I'm just curious if,

1) Anyone else having these issues?

2) If yes, has anyone been able to find a workaround to solve these issues?

3) Any knows where a to find high level technical support contact information for Yahoo?

I believe that if Yahoo is implementing this phase-out, that they should be courteous enough to warn the general public about it. Their password generator exists they say, to allow older third party apps to access mail. If they are phasing out, why not giving a warning where the password generator is?

Would appreciate any input, and hope that the warning on this issue keeps others for losing Yahoo mail on their Mac Mail.

Thank you for listening,

JF

Note: High Sierra often gave the 'Preferences Error,' but also had this variation below, and this is ultimately what led me to believe this is a Yahoo issue.

This worked for me. In Internet Accounts I chose "Add Other Account ..." and chose "Mail Account". I then logged into my Yahoo account via the web, generated an app password for "Mac OS X Mail". I used this password to complete the setup in Internet Accounts. And Viola, there is now a Yahoo mail account.

Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

a brody,

Thanks for your fast and informative reply! I just tried this and didn't work. I used my regular working password and it failed (image below.) I tried their password generator but I'm getting the 'try later,' meaning that Yahoo is done with me for today... probably too many requests troubleshooting this. I'll try again tomorrow and let you know if the password generator made a difference... not holding my breath. They may still be able to identify the OS while working directly with IMAP (selecting 'other mail account' on the e-mail service panel that lists popular e-mail services.) I tried searching for alternate IMAP addresses but didn't find any. Yahoo's IMAP instructions has ONLY these ones that you can see in my screenshot below.

Thanks again,

JF

Yahoo email is not showing up on my imail app. my gmail account works just fine, but I cannot add my two yahoo accounts to imail. HELP!?!?!

Just for the sake of ruling out a few possibilities, are you capable of creating a bootable disk with whichever OSX you are using now? This would be a brand new installation (not clone) with the clean OSX. This is just to check the Mac Mail, there is no need to think of this as a 'reinstall' solution... yet. If you can boot this same OSX from a clean install and succeed to access your Yahoo mail through Mac Mail, then you know you have issues with your original OSX. If the problem persists, then my guess would be it's a Yahoo issue. Also, just to make sure, are you using the Yahoo password generator? It seems to only work with this. I still have an e-mail account that is not generating a password. The best of my research shows, according to some tech in Yahoo, the password generation request must be done from a browser that has previously logged into the account. This is an old account of mine, so I guess I'm toasted... with Mac Mail that is. I can of course login to Yahoo and find my e-mails there. Hope this helps in your troubleshooting and on trying to narrow down the source of the issue. Hope this helps others that are understandably very frustrated with this lack of support from Yahoo (that is now $premium$ and worthless.)

i'm very tech illiterate and bootable disks, etc do not make any sense to me. i have done all the things. password generators and logging out, restarting, changing passwords, logging in on a web browser and then try logging in through mail, either via internet accounts or "other" and i get the same error message, "error with internet accounts preferences" or if i try to log in by adding accounts in mail directly, the whole application shuts down. i don't think it's a yahoo issues since it all works on my phone and in a web browser. just not on the app on my computer.

Mojave/High Sierra, Mail Services Withdrawn from Yahoo maybe other earlier OSX... "error in Internet Accounts preferences."
