iMac target display mode (late 2014)

Hi, i have a iMac (Retina 5k, Late 2014, macOS catalina) and Macbook Pro (2020 intel, macOS Monterey).


Is possible the old iMac as target display mode with the macbook pro? Possible if connect with thunderbolt cable + thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to thunderbolt 2?

Not with Target Display Mode (TDM).


Only a small sub-set of iMacs could be displays for another Mac and your iMac is not among them. Plus the other Mac that is the video SOURCE must be running macOS 10.15 or older, and 2019 or older.


The very restrictive hardware and OS requirements for Target Display Mode are laid out in this Apple article:

Apple begin the deprecation of TDM in Late 2014 and threw the last shovel of dirt in its face in early 2020. As Dr McCoy would have said:



You may be able to connect the with network screen sharing but it will be laggy.
