Yesterday, this red dot appeared on my iPhone (14 Pro Max). I've heard all kinds of theories about it - it's the mic, it's the camera - but no definitive answer. I rebooted the phone and it's gone.
Does anyone actually know what this is, without speculating? Has this phone been hacked? Or is it some other app that was using some service?

I just saw this for a while it’s a red circle around a red dot correct? I turned on screen recording then off again (which is only a larger solid red dot) then the other one went away. Right now, no dot!!!! Wtf could a screen record cancel?
omg this just happened to me like 3 minutes ago & i had the same feeling when i checked if i was screen recording & saw that i wasn’t. I left my phone charging and when i came back i saw it, i got creeped out. then i googled it and ended up here 😭
I just woke up to the same thing on my phone and my first thought was that I was screen recording, so I checked and I wasn't. Then I felt a weird vibe like someone was watching me lol idk. I turned screen recording on and back off and the dot went away so I have no idea what it could have been.

I think it’s cause I wanted to record a scene of friends on Netflix and it failed cause Netflix doesn’t support screen recording Soo the dot just stayed there even if it was failed
No, that's not what's happening. Look at the screen shot. It's not the proximity sensor.
There is a Reddit thread I found where people are very confused about this as well. Screen recording looks similar but it's not screen recording.

I did the same thing and the red dot at the top of my screen went away. I don’t trust this and I need an answer lol
I had vocal control on. Turned it off and red dot disappeared
It is a glich. Just turn on the screen recording and turn it off again.
No because it’s there when you aren’t screen recording

My wife had the same problem on 15 and we could not figure it out!
As others have said it is NOT screen recording etc!!!
We ended up asking Copilot and it turns out that in our particular case it was VOCAL SHORTCUTS…
She had tried to set up some voice commands but ended up not using them in the end… however by doing this she had activated the MIC that was constantly running in the background!
To turn off this feature if it is the same problem in your case then follow these steps:

Toggle ON/OFF
If this is the cause then I think it should be available to toggle!…
However on my own phone it only gave me the option to set it up in the first place… since I had not used or set it up I also did NOT have the TOGGLE option!…

The afore going question about the tiny red dot or at times orange dot. It invariably appears in the center of the little black screen at the top center of of the phone.it invariably appears dead center of the little black screen.
It is the icon for Screen Recording. Tap it in the island and you'll be able to turn it off.
COVID EXPOSURE Notification. Somebody in your contacts or elsewhere sharing it. I think it's an anomoly. My setting is off but I still got it. Went away after I started and stopped a screen recording, which should not be related. Apple bugs maybe. Settings>Exposure Notifications
