AirPods pro 2 keeps dropping out of find my

Hi there - I have been in contact with apple on this, its been escalated but still no resolution.

I have tried:

  • resetting AirPods to factory settings and reconnecting from scratch
  • dropping my iPhone off find my and re-adding
  • Forgetting my AirPods and re-adding them

Still keeps dropping off findmy after a few hours of showing up...sometimes they stay visible in findmy for hours, sometimes for days but eventually they drop off again and I can only get them to show up again by opening the lid and reconnecting to iPhone.

Deeply annoying.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated as not getting any joy out of apple who seem to think its a findmy problem but with so many others reporting same problem I cant help but think its a problem with the AP Pro 2.

I don’t get that message but occasionally it will rename my AirPods as ‘not your AirPods’ in findmy before dropping off findmy. I finally (after many, many frustrating hours of troubleshooting on chat and phone) got support to refer me to the Genius Bar (based on a corresponding case power drain problem likely,IMHO, caused by the case trying to reconnect with findmy constantly) on the weekend and they really helpfully replaced the case under warrenty and I have not had this problem since. I bought these very soon after release day so could have been an early case hardware glitch and bear in mind the full findmy location was only released for the first time with this generation of AirPods Pro. Early days but so far no problems post the case being replaced and usually this problem would start happening after a day or so post forgetting and re-adding the AirPods to my account.

Your duplicate case ID theory is interesting and might explain weird findmy problems in these units.

I suspect that this problem is far more widespread but not reported as you only really look at findmy when you need to locate a lost unit (caused me to look at this when I misplaced mine some months ago) and then can’t see them in findmy. I suspect many people would not even know the pro 2s are findable in findmy. Good luck with your unit.

6B34 is now on the AirPods, and it does actually seem to be working.

I've not touched them for over a week, and I re-checked this morning. The AirPods appear in FindMy, and the battery level of the case and the buds is showing in the battery widget on the phone. Precision finding worked, and the 'Case charging sounds' switch in the AirPods section on the phone is available (it was always grey-ed out before).

So, currently everything seems to be operational, if it continues this way for a month, then I'd call it fixed. There's no release notes so there's no way to know what they did; but something is changed.

Just a quick follow up - I am getting that message now re 'Tell the original owner...' (I probably would have before but wasn't trying to turn on findmy back on via settings...was just resetting and re-adding from scratch each time it fell off findmy).

I have taken them into Genius Bar twice now and they told me they are seeing more and more reports of this and that it should be fixed via an update but as usual no timeline for fix.

While it may be affecting a large number of people it cant be too widespread otherwise the tech news sites would have picked up on it I suspect.

I'm still on 6A303, waiting for the AirPods to update (why there is no "update firmware" button, I'll never understand) so I can't check this yet.

I have spent some more time with Apple support on this and they have confirmed that this is a fault, they know the fix, and it will be fixed in the 'next' firmware. I do not know if 'next' means 305, or something later.

I had another call with apple this morning. They are going to again escalate to engineering (based on new info - upgrading to latest AirPods firmware, replacement of case, install of latest version of iOS etc). I will talk to them again next week and if there is no proposed resolution I will likely seek a refund on the product as findmy is an important reason of why I chose these headphones in a very competitive market with a wealth of options. I will update this thread if there are any meaningful updates.

I've installed the new firmware. No Fix.

It may even be worse.

Now the AirPods will appear in FindMy when the case is open and paired to the phone (useless).

It is impossible to turn FindMy on in the settings, you just get the warning about the Original Owner being able to track them, and then the setting turns itself off.

Again, to be completely clear, these were purchased new from Apple, and I am the original owner.

I'll contact Apple support again.

Do you also get a message when in the airpods settings section you enable FindMy and a popup of "Tell the original owner of these airpods to remove them from apple account"

I wonder if Apple shipped a batch of airpods with the same internal serial number?

Either way, it's not good. If I lose my AirPods Pro 2, I will not be able to find them, and that is part of the purchasing decision, so Apple are in breach of service here, in my opinion.

Thanks for posting that update! When I contacted apple, they said it was a known issue without a known cause/fix and that it would eventually be fixed. I don't know when I first noticed the problem myself. Like you say, it's not like we check FindMy every day!

I can convince mine to show up in FindMy and it'll stay there for a short time (a few days) and then it just disappears again.

I doubt the issue will get much attention until it becomes more widely reported though. I do remember looking on the net for other reports of this at the time I noticed, and I found nothing.
