Emergency SOS via Satellite?

Does anyone know how much the Emergency SOS via Satellite costs after two years? I was quite surprised to hear that Apple charges for it at all, this public safety service should be available to everyone!

Hello LilStarryEyes!

Please tell us where you heard that Apple charges for using Emergency SOS via Satellite. The Support Article about Emergency SOS via Satellite gave no indication of potential charges for using this service, so we’re interested in knowing where you heard that.

Looking forward to your reply!

The very support document you posted from says this exactly:

"Emergency SOS via satellite is free for two years after the activation of iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro."

Once can infer from that, that it may have a cost after 2 years.

@LilStarryEyes:

Apple has not revealed what the cost of it will be after those 2 years are over yet. I would assume they would provide pricing some time closer to when the first 2 years of this service existing are set to end.

It still doesn’t make sense that they would charge for this service, just like you don’t have an additional charge on your phone bill for the ability to call 911… I’m just don’t understand why the cost!

911 does cost you money, just not on your phone bill. It's paid for by tax dollars. Apple, however, is not the recipient of any of your taxes. They have to pay for the service. As they are a for-profit company, they tend not to do things that will lose them money. You can certainly make the argument that Apple has more than enough money and could afford to make the service free. But, their shareholders might think differently.

I see, lol, didn’t reply in the right place but you found the info anyway ~ new to this forum! It still doesn’t make sense that they would charge for this service, just like you don’t have an additional charge on your phone bill for the ability to call 911… I’m just don’t understand why the cost! It’s not like it’s a service that can be abused, it only works if there’s an actual emergency & you can contact 911 any other way… 🤷🏼‍♀️
