I have been using my rechargeable apple mouse for a good number of years and it no longer charges. It seems dead. Can I do anything but throw it away?

Check with Apple Support to be sure.
Recycle it responsibly. Don't throw it in the trash.
If you are sure there is no dirt/debris in the charging port that is preventing the cable from fully seating then I'm afraid three is no other repair possible.
