How to connect a Dell P2415Q monitor to new MacBook Air (M2, 2023)

My new MacBook Air (M2, 2023) is not detecting my Dell P2415Q external monitor. At the Apple Store, they sold me a USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, which I'm using with the Thunderbolt cable that connected my old MacBook Air (2015) to the same monitor. The monitor has worked with (and still works with) my old MacBook Air. Dell support doesn't have any drivers for this monitor for Apple OS, only for Windows -- and I don't know if that's the issue, or if it's a cable issue. Is there a way to use this monitor with my new MacBook Air?

As you already know:

  • Your Dell monitor has three video in ports: HDMI, DisplayPort, & miniDisplayPort.
  • Your 2023 M2 MacBook Air comes with two Thunderbolt 3 / USB 4 ports.

From the Apple Specifications for your laptop:

Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, DVI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)

It looks like your cable/adapter option is:

If the store sold you this adapter: Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter - Apple, it won't work. It states the following: Note: This adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

Hello,

Just replying to you to see whether you got anywhere with this as I'm at a stage where I need to upgrade from my 2015 13" MBP Retina and keen to know if the new MacBook Airs are compatible with the P2415Q – it's a fantastic monitor and still going strong at seven or eight years old.

I found a similar thread from 2015 where users discuss methods of powering up the MBP and the P2415Q in a way for them to recognise each other, maybe this will help: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6753807?page=2&sortBy=best

Even with my current set up, the monitor will sometimes "crash" when the MBP has gone to sleep and I'll need to disconnect and re-connect, or even disconnect the power to the P2415Q in order for it to recognise the MBP again.

Not that it's a deal breaker for upgrading the MBP 2015 – it's struggling with day-to-day tasks now – but knowing the P2415Q was compitable with the current MacBook Airs would mean my employer wouldn't have the expense of a new computer and a new 4K monitor.
