What are the possible negative complications with changing the email address for your Apple ID?

I’ve visited the URL…

https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage

…but, as usual, Apple’s text is ambiguous, assuming the reader understands terms not defined precisely in the article.

In particular, I just want to change from one working email to another. The old address is provided by Network Solutions, while the new address is on gmail.com. Both email addresses will continue to work. I would like to change simply because when Network Solution email fails, it is YOUR problem; when Gmail fails it is THEIR problem to be fixed for a vast number of users by a vastly more competent staff. I’m just testing the waters, to determine what could possibly go wrong!

As mentioned earlier, no issues if you indeed change it instead of creating a new account. Here's how you change the email address you use for your Apple ID:

1. Go to https://appleid.apple.com and sign in.

2. In the Sign-In and Security section, choose Apple ID.

3. Enter the email address that you want to use as your Apple ID.

4. Choose Change Apple ID.

5. If you changed your Apple ID to a third-party email address, check your email for a verification code, then enter the code. Learn what to do if you didn't get the email. --> If you didn't receive your verification or reset email - Apple Support

6. If you use services like iCloud or Messages to share with friends and colleagues, sign in to those services with your updated Apple ID. --> What to do after you change your Apple ID or password - Apple Support
