During a phone call, all cellular communication is cut off. Why is this?

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if this is a normal thing but it tends to be very annoying. I recently noticed while being on hold during a long phone call with the bank, I noticed that while I was on the hold all cellular connection was lost. I could not google anything while calling. I needed to search for another location where I had to go with Maps and I couldn't. No Instagram connection, no TikTok... nada! zero! zip!! I noticed that as soon as I got to my place still on hold with the bank, my iPhone 14 Pro Max connected to the wifi and then I could search the web.

I'm currently using two numbers on my phone. One is an eSIM and the other is a physical SIM card. I have perfect service in the area always and it couldn't be an area with no cellular service. I have 5G connection no problem anywhere in this area. Is there a setting I have to turn off or on?

Thank you all in advance.

There could be several reasons why cellular communication is cut off during a phone call. Here are a few possibilities:

  1. When you're on a call, if the carrier for your other phone number supports Wi-Fi calling, you can answer incoming calls on your other number. When you're on a call using a line that isn't your designated line for cellular data, you need to turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to receive calls from your other line. --> Using Dual SIM with an eSIM - Apple Support (IN)
  2. Interference from various sources can disrupt cellular communication. Electrical devices, radio frequency interference, or even physical obstructions can cause signal interference and result in dropped calls.
  3. During periods of high network traffic, such as during peak hours or major events, the cellular network may become congested. When the network is overloaded, it may struggle to handle all the simultaneous connections, leading to dropped calls.
  4. Sometimes, issues with the call routing infrastructure can cause disruptions. Problems within the telecommunication provider's network or incorrect routing configurations can result in dropped calls.
  5. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  6. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. Suppose you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  7. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.
