You might want to try looking for the pictures in the "Shared with You" folder in the Photos app.

ie: in Photos: Tap "For You", then scroll down to "Shared with You"

Seems the default setting may be saving pics to a "Shared with You" album in the Photos app.

says:

"Control what shared content appears in apps

You can adjust your settings to hide an app’s Shared with You section.

✽. Go to Settings > Messages > Shared with You.

✽. Turn off Automatic Sharing, or turn off Shared with You for a specific app.
