SanDisk 2TB Extreme USB 3.2 disconnecting from my Mac occasionaly

It is a very strange behavior. I use two external SSD-s to my video projects on my new M2 Mini Pro, a 2TB and a 4TB version SSD from SanDisk.

The 4TB SSD is perfect. The other one, the 2TB SSD disconnects occasionelly, one-two-few times per day. Even in stand by mode at the night. I never switch off the computer, I use it remote controlled via Anydesk, but this is an other topic :).

I tried everything: changed the connector cable, changed the Mac socket, changed the SSD in warranty. Nothing helped. Any suggestion to solve this annoying problem?

The problem has been solved by Apple!

Since the latest OS update (14.4.1), I haven't noticed any disconnections at all. It's been 10 days. :) They have successfully worked on the USB handling. I am happy with it. :)

Anyone else?

You may want to check out this SanDisk page since some SanDisk Extreme models have a major firmware bug which can cause data loss.

The external drives being unexpectedly disconnected seems to occur with a lot of different models including other brands for people using Ventura. Try unchecking the option "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" in the System Setting (probably Energy Saver, or Battery Settings depending on desktop or laptop). You may need to use the System Settings search feature to locate it, but the option is only available when an external drive is connected. I'm not sure if it is available for external SSDs.

But what is the answer on non working time disconnecting, at night? By the way I am checking that firmware option.

First step would be unchecking the "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" option if it is available when you have your SSD connected. I was told by a Crucial tech support person many years ago that some SSDs don't like having the OS manage the SSDs power levels....it is better to allow the SSD to determine when it goes into a low power state (they were talking about SSDs installed internally, but would also apply to external ones). Plus USB devices (such as the SSD's enclosure...the SSD is a separate part within that enclosure) tend to have their own issues when resuming from a computer's low power state as well in addition to any potential issues the SSD itself may have.

Also, make sure to connect the SSD directly to the computer to see if that makes any difference. Multi-port adapters, docks, and hubs can all add their own extra issues to the mix, so a direct connection is necessary to verify if the SSD still has the issue. Also try disconnecting all other external devices in case one of them is interfering with the SSD...this means only the external SSD is connected directly to the computer.

Unfortunately it seems Ventura has a much higher rate of disconnects than previous versions of macOS....this is just from reading these forums for the last few years.

You can provide Apple with product feedback here (Apple won't respond, but maybe if enough people report the issue maybe Apple will see fit to look into it...I would provide feedback for macOS Ventura for this issue):

That's actually the only time I've had a disk disconnect. When one of my Macs was sleeping overnight. I had a Sandisk portable SSD connected to my M1 MacBook Air for Time Machine and it would inevitably disconnect overnight with the lid closed. I switched to a Crucial SSD and it has never disconnected.

I had three WD HHD drives connected to a Late 2015 5K iMac and when the first betas of Big Sur were released, all three would disconnect on a regular basis. When Monterey was released, only one of them would. Two of them died and the third has never disconnected.

I gave up long ago trying to figure out the causes.

I have a pair of Samsung T7 drives I edit video on. One always gets dropped by my MBP, the other is always fine. It only started in Ventura, so I can only assume there's an issue in macOS. I have found it's more likely to happen if I'm plugging it in via my CalDigit T3 dock, but even plugging it directly into the Mac itself doesn't seem to be a solid fix.
