Actually it may very well matter.

iMessage allows the sender to use either a telephone number or an Apple ID to identify herself/himself. To effectively block this person, you must block both of these.

Troubleshooting Blocking of Texts:

The number is being blocked. So, perhaps there there another Contact with this info?

Blocking Out Texters:

Use Malwarebytes Mobile Security. The free version blocks popups. The paid version blocks out known spam numbers, and lets you add your own and report items to the Developer. So, consider using it. Read the following post to see how to use this software: Blocked numbers - Apple Community

If you open the message, look for the person’s name at the top. Then click on it … assuming you see a “>” to its right. Then click the resulting “Info” circle and you will see the address that sent the message. It will be identified with a “Recent” box.
