This is why you should use TIme Machine to back up your Mac every hour. Then you could retrieve that spreadsheet from an earlier timeframe before your mishap. The /Applications/Time Machine application would let you do this.
Without Time Machine backups, and any other backup solution that would allow you to retrieve an earlier instance of that Excel spreadsheet — you are done.
