Music app syncing to iPhone

Can't get music on USB drive leftover from iTunes architecture to sync to my phone using Music app. I try and point the app to the location of my old iTunes music directory on USB drive but it only seems to sync music I have purchased from Apple. I've tried telling Music app where the files are but it won't sync them. This started when I ripped an old CD I found using Music and then tried to upadate my phone to get the new music. Now ALL my old music on my phone is greyed out and won't play. Lost the artwork too. Frustrated.

Any ideas on how to get the music to sync?
