I have many .mov files which I want to convert to mp4 files. I have a tried a number of on-line conversion sites. Each time conversion fails. I also have tried applications such as MacX Video Converter Pro. It too has failed. What's the solution?
No special conversion is needed. Just change the suffix from ".mov" to ".mp4".
Tried that. Does not work. Keep getting notice that "document is not compatible with Quicktime Player." I recall having an application on my recently deceased, 10-year-old+ lap top running OS X 10 something that would convert older stuff but cannot remember the name of the application. If I could, it would be worth purchasing an old, used laptop to do the work. Any suggestions?

Control-click (right click), the .mov file, select rename, and change the ending of the file from .mov to .mp4.

Have you tried iMovie? You can import a .mov file, then go to File > Share > File to export a file that is a .mp4.
It should be on your Mac or available for free download on App Store for Mac.
See if Handbrake will convert it.
