Arrow keys do not advance powerpoint slide after clicking in notes field

I'm having an issue where while in presenter view in powerpoint clicking on the notes section will cause the slide deck to no longer respond to arrow key presses. Restarting the slideshow fixes the issue, but that seems to be the only way to fix it ATM. I've had this problem across multiple macs and only just recently tracked down what was causing it.
