Open the Terminal application (in the folder Applications > Utilities).
Enter this command to list all the DVD burners connected to your Mac:
drutil list
If there is only one, enter this command to erase the DVD:
drutil -drive 1 erase full
If there are more than one DVD burner, use the number listed in the output of the first command. For instance, if you have 2 DVD burners, and you want to erase the data from the second DVD burner, replace the "1" in the command above with "2".

Would that mean I need a different player? My disk is a DVD-RW by Maxwell so not sure if this is a disk or a player issue.
GCC-4247N can read and write CD media, and can read but not write DVD.
You need a DVD-RW drive for writing or erasing DVD-RW media.
