Remove DVD from iMac for external use
The new Apple devices come without a DVD drive. I wonder if we can remove the DVD drive from old iMac for external use. Any advice or suggestion are most welcome. Thanks in advance!

External CD/DVD and CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drives are cheap enough that it's not worth the bother.
You can find lots of brands of portable USB burners on Amazon. Note that some portable USB burners need more power than a single USB port can provide and come with cables to let them suck power from two ports, which may be a bit of an inconvenience.
You can also get desktop drives with their own powered enclosures.
Note that the Apple USB SuperDrive has a reputation for being picky about power. It seems to want to be hooked up directly to a Mac without a built-in optical drive. As in, plugged into a USB-A port on the Mac or into an Apple-brand USB-C to USB adapter that is plugged into a USB-C port on the Mac. If you plug it in through a hub or dock, it may not work too well.

Possibly but the effort is not worth it! Simply purchase an external CD/DVD drive, they begin at <$50. I recommend at www.macsales.com, they offer many solutions and I'm sure you will find one that works well.
By the way, Macs have not had internal DVD drives for over a decade, since 2012.
That's not very practical, when third party USB CD/DVD drives can be purchased for $20 to $40.

As mentioned, I have one of these on my 2019 iMc & works a treat...
