apple ID for purchases, and apple ID for everything else

somehow, long ago, i managed to wind up with two apple IDs.

this never really rose to a major issue until recently.

while i would like to have a single ID i was told by Apple that it was not possible to get rid of one of them.

so, now, i was trying to watch some movies that i have in my iTunes library on Apple TV, but i am unable to see my libraries on Apple TV because Apple TV only sees my Apple ID for purchasing, not the one i use for everything else. and i cannot find any way to use my other Apple ID to search for libraries on my computer.

it is very frustrating. i tried shutting off the purchasing Apple ID in settings of the Apple TV, but that does not work.

any help would be appreciated.

Hello remigijusb,

Though it is not possible for you to merge the information and purchases from two Apple ID's, there is a work around that you may want to consider. Check out this page with information about Family Sharing - Apple.

Family Sharing lets you and up to five other family members share access to amazing Apple services like Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple News+, Apple Arcade, and Apple Card.1 Your group can also share iTunes, Apple Books, and App Store purchases, an iCloud storage plan, and a family photo album. You can even help locate each other’s missing devices.

This will allow you to keep and use the two respectively different Apple IDs while still getting the ability to share songs, albums, movies, TV shows, books, and apps between the two Apple IDs.

If you review the page about Family Sharing - Apple and find that it is something you feel will work for you and be beneficial, you can use the steps in this guide to Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support.

We hope this information helps you out.

Take care!

Hey there remigijusb,

Did you already set up Family Sharing and add both your Apple ID accounts? If so, you should be able to use the steps in the following link to switch the accounts on your Apple TV so you can access the different libraries:

Share Apple TV with multiple users

As for the issues you’re seeing with Photos and People, what device and OS is this occurring on? You may want to make a post about that in the community for that device. The community wants to help with any issues you’re having.

Regards.

Hello remigijusb,

Thanks for that information. Family sharing merely shares the purchases with other accounts. Home Sharing shares the actual content on other devices on the same network.

Since the other purchases are not actually on that device, only shared from Family Sharing, it may not work. We do not have any info about a setting to change for this: Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices - Apple Support

It may not be ideal, but you can make another administrator account on your computer, and sign it in with the second Apple ID. Then, download the media, and set up Home Sharing from the second account.

This option would be the same as like a family computer, where a husband and wife have separate accounts to keep their music and video libraries separate. If the husband wants to watch his purchase, he signs in to the account, and then Home Sharing shared from it. If the wife wants her info, then she logs the husband out, logs in, and uses Home Sharing.

Thanks.

Hello remigijusb,

Since these issues seem to be related to having two Apple IDs, another option would be to migrate your data from one Apple ID to another. Of course, you cant migrate everything, like purchases, backups, etc, but if all of your purchases are related to one Apple ID, you can migrate most of your user-created data like photos, notes, contacts, etc, to that Apple ID.

When you sign out, any data stored in iCloud will be removed from your device but will remain in iCloud. Before you sign out, you’ll be asked if you want to keep a copy of any of this information on your device. You can learn more here:

Once signed out of the second Apple ID you can sign in with the Apple ID that has all of your purchases. This will merge the data on your devices with the data in iCloud. At that point, the issue should be resolved.

If that does resolve the issue, you can delete one of your Apple IDs. That said, if you delete an Apple ID, you cannot use the email address for another Apple ID. If that's the email address you want to use for your Apple ID (and it's not an iCloud email address), we recommend creating a new email address, changing the email address associated with your Apple ID to the new email address, and then deleting it. You can learn more here: How to delete your Apple ID account - Apple Support

Once you disassociate the email with the Apple ID to be deleted you can change the email address associated with the Apple ID that has all of the purchases: Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

Keep in mind, deleting an Apple ID is permanent. You can also try to migrate your data before changing or deleting your Apple ID to ensure you have everything you need.

Thanks.

i found on appletv where i could change the user id. pretty clear that i failed to look everywhere, but i have been able to change to my userid that has the libraries on my computer, and all is as it was before on my previous appletv.

i think that with the new(ish) appletv i was able to set everything ub with a bluetooth connection automatically, and that is where everything changed.

thanks everyone for your suggestions and help. you are a great group of people!

Hi genieen16.

thanks for taking the time to look at my little problem. i have and use home sharing currently.

AppleTV does not give me any options about my libraries. it says tat there are no shared libraries found on my computer based on my apple id that i only use for purchases.

that is not the id i use for everything i do on my computer. nowhere do i find where i could change that in AppleTV settings.

i did not use to have this problem until i upgraded my AppleTV to MN:A1625 MHY93LL/A. i used to be able to watch photos from my library, music from my library, movies from my iTunes folder (not purchased from Apple) with the older AppleTV A1625 MR912LL/A.

thanks, ryane77.

i am signed into AppleTV device with the appleid that does not do the purchasing. i am wondering why apple tv only searches for libraries content with the purchasing appleid.

it just makes no sense to me.

if i were to make the computer administrator the purchasing appleid, how do i even do that? when i go to system settings, there is no option to change computer administrator or to change appleid.

this is way over my head, and i think i'll just have to let this lie. it would have been such a simple way to view content from my computer on a large screen as it once was, but i guess apple just moved on.

disappointing that on these levels i feel the apple is letting us down. i work a lot on my photo library, and the Photos app is really just crap these days. if i put names to faces, they may or may not be there when i look later, the people view, hardly ever loads properly, dropping the photos associated with that person, i could go on, but i am venting. i used to love the apple system, but more and more i feel like a second class citizen with them, or more accurately as a cow to be endlessly milked.

sorry.

thanks for your suggestion. i appreciate, and will definitely try it.

as for my Photos app rant, i have posted this to the community, with no interest from anyone, as i recall.

i thought that my problems were, or could have been, due to my antiquated 2015 iMac, and eventually, i ponied up for the Studio and new screen, when for years, it appeared that Apple was not going to make another iMac with apple silicon.

nevertheless, the same identical problems carried forth to the new studio. so it must be a software issue, at least to my mind.
