If you press continue it takes you back to Apple ID and then passcode then you get the error message again in a circle.

The “Update Apple ID Settings” message on your iPhone 12 Pro Max means that there is a discrepancy between your Apple ID settings and the settings on your device. This could be due to a number of reasons, such as:

  • You changed your Apple ID password or made some modifications to the Apple ID credentials.
  • Some Apple ID information is incomplete or not updated.
  • You recently restored your iPhone from a backup.
  • You are using a new Apple ID on your iPhone.

Though you did try to do the following but what was the prompt that you got is not celar from your post.

  1. Tap on the "Settings" app on your iPhone's home screen.
  2. At the top, you should see a banner indicating that you need to update your Apple ID settings. Tap on it.
  3. A screen will appear with the details of the required updates. Read through the information provided to understand what changes are needed.

When you follow the on-screen instructions to complete the necessary updates. This may involve entering your Apple ID password, verifying your identity, or updating your payment or iCloud settings.

It's important to keep your Apple ID information up to date as it is tied to various Apple services, such as iCloud, App Store, iTunes, and more. By ensuring your settings are current, you can maintain the security and functionality of your Apple account and enjoy a seamless experience across your Apple devices.

To improve understanding of the phenomenon, it would be highly beneficial if you could share a screenshot. Visual representations carry greater impact than written descriptions.

Please remember that this is a public forum, so when attaching a screenshot, please avoid including any personal credentials such as IP addresses, card details, email IDs, Apple IDs, IMEI numbers, serial numbers, phone numbers, order IDs, or any identifiable location information if you are sharing a map.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.
