One further step......

I originally posted under connection issues - it's been seen but nobody appears to have an answer, but I am a little further on...... I have a Sony TRV60E connected to my iMac via the firewire 800 port. (I originally tried the Thunderbolt port via an adaptor. The adaptor was recognised, but the camera didn't show.) The camera can now be seen when looking at the Firewire device tree, but it will not connect with any program on the Mac. Admittedly I only have Quicktime and Sony's own Play Movies home, but the camera does not show in finder either. I am running High Sierra 10.13.6 and this Mac will not support any further updates; iMovies will only run on Mojave and higher.

The camera dates from 2004, the Mac will not run the USB driver software provided with it, referring to it as unsupported, AKA too old.....

Does anyone know if there is a way to have this camera connect??

It appears that your previous question was posted a section for old software that gets few views:

This section, Using Apple Support Communities, gets view views as well. I will ask the Mods to move you to the iMac section, which is probably best place to get eyes on this question.

As to the issues, what I remember is that Sony in that time frame was very poor about supporting Macs. A friend is a long-time Sony top-tier reseller and I heard him complain a lot about his Mac-owing customers not be able to get things going with Sony video devices.

You should, however, be able to use Image Capture to at least move movies on the camera to your computer:

Use Image Capture to transfer images - Apple Support

They may be easier to handle once physically on the computer.

Thanks for your response. I've tried all the links and solutions that you have shown and pointed me to and none work! The camera remains resolutely hidden on image capture; the Sony website urges me to download the latest Play Memories home and again, no sign of the camera. I've switched to USB as the Sony book that came with the camera indicates that this OS should recognise the thing automatically, no other driver needed..... No it doesn't!
