A reoccurring problem in synching an iPad to a Mac

The "Trust this Computer" message keeps flashing on and then disappearing with a period of about a second, and the "Trust" button has no effect when 'clicked' when it appears; at the same time, the iPad appears and then disappears in a Finder window.

Both the Mac and iPad are running the most advanced system they can, with no available updates (Mac OS 12.6.7 and iOS 16.5.1); the iPad is connected through a USB port; and I have restarted both the Mac and iPad - and the problem keeps happening.

How can I successfully backup my iPad to my Mac?

Hello AnotherLongtimeAppleUser,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

We were able to locate som helpful troubleshooting steps that may be able to guide you:

"If you need help with the alert message

If you tap Trust or Don't Trust, but your computer doesn't accept your answer, or if the alert message won't appear, follow these steps. Try again after each.

  1. Make sure that your computer has the latest version of macOS or the latest version of iTunes. If you downloaded iTunes for Windows from the Microsoft Store, make sure that iTunes Mobile Device Helper is enabled as a startup item.
  2. Disconnect and reconnect your device from your computer.
  3. Restart your computer.
  4. Restart your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch.
  5. Reset your Location & Privacy settings.
  6. Reset your Network settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset and tap Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before."

More details can be found here: About the 'Trust This Computer' alert message on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If the issue persists, can you provide a few more details? Does the same thing happen if you connect to another computer?

Cheers!

Thank you, Omar_A1,

Clearly, I have gremlins. I had found that advice on the site, and done all of it - and still had my problem yesterday. Today, I saw I had a response (yours), read it, and before saying it didn't work after doing all that, tried again.

And of course, it worked. Nothing had been restarted, only left sitting overnight. I have no idea why it didn't work yesterday and now does, but thank you for prompting me to try again!
