Ensure that your iPad has been updated to the most recent version of iPadOS. At time of writing, for supported models, this being iPadOS 16.5.1.

Performance issues are sometimes linked to lack of available internal storage. You need to ensure that you always have 4-6GB of available space for your iPad to be able to work properly and reliably.

System Data includes various system caches, logs and system resources. Clearing cached data can often help with improving performance. The only element that you can directly influence is perhaps your browser caches - which you can manually clear if you wish to do so.

For Safari:

Settings > Safari > Clear History & Website Data

For other browsers, you’ll need to find the relevant section of the App settings - which may be within the App itself.

Otherwise, transient system caches can be significantly reduced by performing a forced-restart of your iPad - although caches, by their nature, will again accumulate and be automatically managed by the operating system.

Forced-restart

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

It is impossible to increase the amount of RAM or internal storage in your iPad - as this is fixed during manufacture; what you have is fixed for the life of your device. If you are running low on available device storage, you can subscribe to a higher tier of iCloud storage - but this is not a substitute for internal storage.

If your internal storage is full, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. If your iPad has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

Crashes or auto-resets mean that the device is near the capacity for the RAM; I'm guessing the amount of total RAM is about 6GB, and there's no way to upgrade the RAM without getting a new device.

Also, make sure that at least 10% of the total drive space is blank.

To avoid crashes, consider turning off applications that take up space. You can do this by pushing up with four fingers, and deleting the cache one document at a time.
