I bought this external because the box said it was compatible with El Capitan, then of course I immediately had to upgrade my OS to Big Sur. I never used it, so after installing the Mac software file that it came with, I went to reformat it using Disk Utility but I get this error message. Any ideas?

Very often the Software that come bundled on new External Drives is buggy and in some cases not Compatible of the Version of macOS is is being used on.
In you case macOS 11 Big Sur
Suggest removing the Third Party Software as per the Manufactures Specific Instructions
