I took photos with my iPhone and then once they synced to my other devices through iCloud, I added captions via my Mac. I do editing and purging through my Mac where I can see detail in my photos so it made sense to add m captions there. Now the captions do not show up when I view my pictures on my iPhone. Why is this and is there anything I can do about it. It took a long time to get all the captions entered.

Which system version is running on your iPhone? You need at least iOS 15 on the iPhone, to be able to see the caption that has been synced from the Mac to the iPhone with iCloud (https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/view-photos-iph3d267610/15.0/ios/15.0) On earlier versions of iOS it ha not been possible to see a caption for a photo.
Only the caption you enter on your Mac can be viewed on the iPhone, not the title.

And which system version is running on your Mac? OS X 10.11 is rather old.
All captions I entered on my Mac are visible on my iPhone, when I view a photo enlarged and look it the details below the photo. But my macs are running the most recent system version, macOS 13 Ventura, not El Capitan. Just to be sure, you typed the captions into the third textfield of the Info, where it says "Add a caption", not into the first field for the title?
Perhaps your has not yet finished to update the captions in iCloud. What is the status bar showing? Check the status of your library in Photos for macOS - Apple Support
