Photo captions not displaying in my Photos app

Captions that I entered on my Mac when creating an album don't show up when I view the album in Photos on my iPhone. Is there a fix for this?

How did you enter the captions on the Mac - by typing into the title field or the captions field?

And how did you transfer the photos to iPhone?

On the Mac we can add titles and captions by typing into the title field in the info or into the captions field. Photos iOS on the iPhone cannot show the titles, only the captions.

And it will depend on how we transfer the photos, if the captions will be transferred to the iPhone.

When we sync the photos from our Mac to the iPhone with iCloud Photos, we can see the captions but not the titles, because the iPhone cannot handle the titles.
When we transfer the photos with Shared albums, neither the titles nor the captions will be transferred. However, when we share each photo individually, we can transfer the captions as comments.
When we sync albums with the Finder or iTunes, the captions will not be transferred.

If you have not done so, use iCloud Photos to sync your Photos Library between your devices.

Hi Léonie,

Thanks for the quick reply. I will follow your suggestion to use iCloud Photos to sync my Photos Library. I'm not sure how to do that, but will follow some suggestions from Apple Support that I found.

Some answers to your questions:

(1) I typed the captions into the captions field using the Photos app on my Mac.

(2) Some of the photos I took on my iPhone; others I got from another person traveling with our group. He had shared them with my wife using AirDrop and she shared them with my using AirDrop.

(3) I prepared the album using the Photos app on my Mac.

On a related issue: I found the whole process of working with the albums to be confusing and frustrating. For example, once I had prepared the album I thought I could share the album with others in the family (all of whom have iPhones) just by typing in their phone numbers or e-mail addresses. This didn't work. So I ended up using iCloud (I don't recall how, exactly!) to get a link that I could send to each family member using Messages or WhatsApp (I forget which). This seemed to work, but no one could see the captions.

On a further related issue: I also prepared a Slideshow for the album, but likewise found that frustrating, in part because the captions didn't display in the slideshow either.

In searching online, I discovered that this issue of captions not being displayed in various circumstances was raised by Apple users in 2012. The discussion then implied that Apple didn't want to allow that info to be shared, perhaps because of privacy concerns (?). It's startling to me that this is still an issue in 2024 and was not addressed in any part of the Help system that I looked at, e.g., by saying "by the way, you're the only person who will see the content of the captions"!
