Camera mode keeps activating by itself

for the last 10 days, whenever the phone is resting - on a table or in my pocket - it will intermittently open the camera viewfinder screen. Plugged in, or on a MagSafe, it will charge faster than it drains; but it will otherwise deplete the battery fairly quickly.

swiping the screen up does not show that the camera app is open: it simply closes the camera mode.

if I use the side button to put the phone to sleep, it will wake up to go into camera mode - usually after 3+ minutes.

forcing a restart doesn’t change the behavior.

all other apps can be closed, with nothing close to the phone, and it will still activate the viewfinder.

any suggestions or guesses gratefully received!

That's definitely curious behavior. Restarting and closing out the other apps are good steps to take. We see that your phone is already up to date too, so that's also not a factor.

If you are using a case or a screen protector on your iPhone, we advise removing both of them and seeing if the behavior continues. Sometimes, unexpected pressures on the display from one of those items can cause apps to launch.
