Re-installing the OS from Recovery failed, saying the Macintosh HD could not be downgraded.

I have a 2021 24" M1 iMac running Monterey 12.5.7 . After an anydesk hack attack, re-installing the OS from Recovery failed, saying the Macintosh HD could not be downgraded. Why? The HD is the original component.

Per Apple: If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.

Sorry, Mr Hoffman, for not getting back to you, but I have moved house and decided not to rebuild the MacOS while that was going on; fortunately (until now) there seemed to be no fallout from my scam attack.

But now. I have a weird problem - in Apple Mail, a seemingly careless keypress has removed the "All Mail" folder and I see no way to get it back. If there is a direct way to do that, please let me know!

So I decided to restore from a TM backup.

Following the support page instructions to restore the entire Macintosh HD from a TM backup failed, because modifying any of the folders at the HD level "are required by the OS and can't be modified".

So I decided to follow the MacOS User Guide "Recover … from a TM Backup" method

And in Step 2 "Reinstall Monterey" in the Recovery window, I get back to the fail because "the Macintosh HD cannot be downgraded".

It looks as if I will have to go back to your advice - reinstall MacOS but Ventura this time - and hope there are no more surprises!

Thanks, AB, but I wish Apple would clarify things more ?carefully - frinstance by saying Ventura+ is required instead of simply "you can't do that".

And in terms of your little list … my iMac is 2021, and I think came with Monterey, so I think a recover to Monterey would be reasonably expected. However, I've moved on (to a new set of curiosities!)

Cordially,

Thanks, A B

I'm following the support file instructions (for Monterey) and am on Internet, so presumably it is an Internet restore. The support file does say that "reinstalling MacOS requires an internet connection".

The disk-choice screen did seem to allow me to use the Time Machine disk, but I want to reinstall the current version of Monterey on the OEM disk, not one that might have bugs from hacks or errors in ordinary use.

Erase and re-install macOS, and restore: Restore your Mac from a backup - Apple Support

I’m not sure if you’ll get Monterey or Ventura there, though. I think Recovery on Apple silicon gets you the same macOS version you had, but I don’t have a way to test that, and the doc doesn’t indicate.
