update airpods pro firmware with a missing earbud

I've lost an earbud on my 1st gen airpods pro, but the other one works just fine so I dont care much there.

But the firmware has been stuck on 4E71.

So far I've tried un-pairing and re-pairing a couple of times, and keeping the device charged to a 100%.

But nothing seems to trigger a firmware upgrade.

Is there anyway I can force trigger a firmware upgrade without the missing earbud? I know theres no force option, just Apple magic to happen, but its annoying that theres no debug information to identify if a firmware upgrade actually gets triggered or not.

Hey there momos4ever,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, is the macOS or iOS device that your AirPods connected to updated to the latest software version as well? If not, we would recommend updating your other devices to see if that's able to get the AirPods firmware update started.

Hello, to be clear, I already checked with apple support, and followed the steps they gave as well. All of my devices, ios, macos, ipados are updated to the latest software version, etc.

As I mentioned in the post, one of my airpods pro's has the left earbud missing, and no matter what I do, its firmware doesnt update. My other 2 airpods pro's sets (mine & my wife's) are also updated to the latest version, i.e. I have 3 airpods pro's with 1 missing a single earbud. The complete ones are updated.

So I highly suspect that because its missing an earbud, some condition in firmware update process blocks it thinking it'll update when the missing earbud is replaced. But I have no need or inclination to spend a $100 on a replacement earbud when I'm just fine with the singular earbud.
