I am having difficulties moving files into folders on my external LaCie External Hard drive. I used to be able to do this with no problem. I am on a Mac Mini running Monterey 12.6.7.

I am directly downloading a lot of files to a folder on my external hard drive. There are a lot of them and now I am trying to organize them by moving them into separate folders within the master folder. There used to be no problem doing this.

But now when I click on the destination folder that I want it to go to (and it is highlighted), then when I start dragging the file toward the folder, the highlight goes gray and the home folder is highlighted. Of course, this means that the file goes nowhere!

Please help and thank you in advance.

Troubleshooting 2 things.

Was there any mis-click or the mouse is faulty?

Try to open two finder windows each showing source and destination folders. Use keyboard shortcuts (Cmd+C or X, and Cmd+V) to copy, move and paste into place.

Is the destination folder has No/Read-only access to your macOS account?

Right click on the target folder, and read ‘Get info’. You need full access.

Otherwise, the disk might be failing. Try out an app - DriveDx to get a full diag of its health.

Try and eject the external HDD and Connect it again to see if the problems persist

Thanks! I have read & write access for all folders plus I am the only one who has access or uses the puter. The mouse could be failing as I sometimes have issues when doing other things. Getting a new mouse is on my Amazon Prime Day shopping list as well as a new mousepad!

I will also investigate the hard drive. It is pretty old I think I got it in 2018. Hopefully it is the mouse that is the issue!
