translucent lock screen - how to disable

I've only recently updated my iPhone 12 to iOS 16 a day ago and discovered a HUGE problem (for me anyway)......the lock screen now has a strange translucency that shows an app thru the lock screen....this is very bad because I use a wonderful App called "white noise" to help me sleep at night, it plays all night long, but never showed thru the lock screen before.

The problem is that I can't change how the app looks, and it's background is very bright, so when I tap my phone at night, which previously gave me just enough light to find my water glass (I use a solid black wallpaper with a very dim clock setting, it was enough to see in my pitch-black-by-necessity room, I'm very light sensitive and cannot sleep if there is any light at all).....now, when I tap my phone it shows this white noise app thru the lock screen, which is bright, and it literally blinds me at night.....gah!

I cannot find a setting to revert back to how it was - zero translucency - and have searched numerous forums without finding anything helpful ....please help! I cannot sleep without this white noise app and I cannot get *back* to sleep after being blinded just to get a sip of water......I want my black wallpaper to be fully opaque!

WHY OH WHY doesn't Apple take people's PREFERENCES into account before just changing things without giving us a setting for it!!! This is extremely frustrating.

Thank you jdo_apple, once again I really appreciate the quick reply.

Wish you could see me slapping my head over this one, even though the phone rebooted more than once during the iOS update, and I did that step once again last night trying to figure this out (none of those reboots reset things to the way they were, I had quite the sleepless night)....BUT, (even though my first thought at your response was "seriously?!?"....) I did reboot again JUST NOW and lo and behold, the translucency seems gone. Fingers crossed that it stays gone.

As a tech-geek myself, I would love to know more about this - how it occurred and how/why rebooting made it go away - if there is such an explanation. If there isn't then I'll just assume you somehow traversed the interwebs and automagically fixed my phone. Thank you.

I will mark your reply as "best answer", have a great rest of your day. :-)

Hello TchKtn,

We're not able to say what changes in that app might be possible (as this is not an Apple product), you may wish to reach out to the app developers for assistance customizing this app as it now works with iOS 16 or what other options you may have. This article can help with this: How to contact an app developer - Apple Support.

Another option to consider if you want a black screen with white noise would be to utilize the Accessibility feature on your iPhone to play background sounds, which does include options similar to white noise (as well as several other options great for sleep and relaxing) and the ability to play through a locked screen. Learn more here: Play background sounds on iPhone to mask environmental noise - Apple Support.

We hope this helps. Let us know if we can assist with anything else at all. Take care.

Hi Gena,

Thank you for the reply, I deeply appreciate it, but my question must have not been worded correctly.

It is not the App that has a problem, it is iOS 16 that now has some sort of translucency applied to the Lock Screen, that I do. not. want.

I VERY carefully customized my own Lock Screen purposefully to be very dark, with a solid black background and with very dim light for the clock when tapped. I hate - but can live with - the obscenely large music (play/pause) widget that is also bright. Why let us customize our Lock Screen then destroy it with this obnoxious translucency?

It is the translucent effect I want to disable.

And I'm sorry but the built-in background noise in iOS is not sufficient for my needs. I have been using White Noise for years and love it, I don't want to part with it as it has MANY sounds, options, and settings that iOS 'background' noise feature lacks.

SO really all I want is to disable the Lock Screen translucency - that should never have been modified without giving users a setting for this, why presume everyone wants that?

I would be deeply grateful for ongoing assistance with this, thank you.
