I DO NOT have maps set to avoid highways but it’s seems to be taking me through strange routes to avoid them anyway. When I’m traveling in unfamiliar areas I would prefer to stay on the main roads rather than going through strange little residential areas. Any fix for this?

When you select the directions, is the car highlighted or something else? Mine defaults to bike (by choice), so if I'm driving, I have to always select auto. Otherwise, I get routed in the way you are describing.
