Incoming SMS sporadically not working

Hello,

this is the current situation: on an iPhone Mini (latest) there are two numbers: a physical SIM and an eSIM.

The physical SIM is used to make calls and receive messages while the eSim is used for data only.

Sending messages seems to work (at least got no complaints about missing messages, but then again that is hard if the recipient is unaware of a message that should arrive...) but receiving messages sporadically does not work. A lot of clients complain about messages not being responded to and can actually show off what they sent.

Before switching to the iPhone, we had no such issues and - as stated above - it sometimes works and sometimes not. This is a big issue as appointments are made and probably cancelled which in turn are invoiced (or shouldn't be invoiced if the cancellation was soon enough).

Can someone advice?

Best regards,

Sascha

Ensure that you have a strong and stable cellular signal. Poor signal strength can lead to intermittent message reception. Try moving to a different location or restarting your device to see if it improves the signal.

In your narration of the issue you somehow missed the fact that whether you are addressing SMS or iMessage. Though the Title says SMS but the body does not mention that at all. Hence my answer will have umpteen number of "ifs" and "buts".

  • In this case, eSIM or SIM is irrelevant. Since eSIM has data it can send iMessages
  • You are able to send but not able to receive some of it. (SMS or iMessage is not clear
  • You said: The physical SIM is used to make calls and receive messages. Sending part is omitted by you. Do you have SMS messaging plan enabled by your Carrier?
  • Do all of them know both the Phone numbers?
  • From whom you are not receiving SMS? From Android Clients or iOS users?

iMessage: When you are sending maybe you are using your Apple ID and not your Phone number if the iMessage is not activated at your end. Those who do not have your Apple ID will not be able to send messages to you. If at all they send on your number and if they have not activated Send as SMS you will not receive any messages from them

SMS: If you have SMS plan on SIM and shared eSIM number here there is a clear chance of miscommunication.

  1. For iPhone to Apple Devices --> Activate iMessage
  2. For sending (iPhone to non-Apple Devices )
    1. Photos/Videos/Files--> Get MMS enabled by your Carrier. Apple Inc does not provide MMS services.
    2. Texts - Get an SMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS services.

To activate iMessage and FaceTime using your Phone number

First, check to know whether you have an SMS plan enabled at least for One SMS*** with your carrier. Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider) the agency that issued the SIM to you

If your iPhone is used with a carrier not found in the wireless carrier articles, make sure you can send and receive international SMS. (One SMS*** Only)

If you can't turn on or sign in to iMessage or FaceTime - Apple ...

*** You may not have an SMS plan enabled by your carrier for the SIM/eSIM that you use on your device. Apple Inc does not provide SMS services.

You need MMS enabled by your carrier. and in your Settings. See the Pic below

Note that iMessage relies on Internet connectivity.

If someone else with an iPhone tries to send a message to you – and their phone is set up to believe that your phone is an iPhone – their phone will try iMessage first. If either phone is offline, the send will fail; the person sending the message will see a red "Not Delivered" notice.

At that point, the sender has the option to "Try Again" or "Send as Text Message" by tapping the "!" in a circle. But if they're not familiar with the distinction between iMessages and SMS/MMS messages, they might wonder why some messages are "Delivered" and others are "Not Delivered" and leave it at that.

Reg the reception: the phone is often in areas with great reception

Sorry for not being clear enough. I meant SMS. The SIM card (which should be used for SMS) has SMS enabled by the provider. No way to take it off the plan with that provider. He happily charges every single SMS sent. Sending messages works. But clients complain about messages sent to me and waiting for an answer. That never comes as the message doesn't show up on my end.

> Do all of them know both the Phone numbers?

At the very latest when they answer a SMS they received they know the number, so this shouldn't be a problem.

> Other device manufacturer

Should be Android
