What if my desk top Mac does not have a slot for an SDXC card?
do I need a special cable to transfer data from an sd card to my desk top Mac?

You can find lots of external card readers that plug into USB-A or USB-C ports. And lots of adapters to go beween USB-A and USB-C. There are also card readers in many docks and hubs – and even in some printers.
I would suggest checking that whatever card reader you buy can run at USB 3 or better speed (not USB 2 speed).
