"Charging port on the bottom" is a pretty poor design, given how it prevents you from using the mouse during recharge operations. But the mouse is so thin on the front and back sides that the only other place they could have put a charging port (without changing the overall shape) would have been on the side.
With a 20w USB-C charger, a USB-C to Lightning charging cable, and while you sleep, or not using your iMac for a few hours. It is a scheduling issue to recharge the Magic Mouse II when you are not using it. This is the solution I use and with the bluetooth icon in the menu extras bar, I can determine when the mouse needs to be recharged per suggested scheduling.

FWIW, when I first bought my current iMac, I had the same exact thought. but after using it for a while, I have found that the mouse only falls to 50% charge remaining after about two weeks. so I charge it overnight when it gets to that point. I can charge it without any inconvenience of not being able to use it while charging.
Adding answers for earlier version of magic mouse with replaceable and chargeable AA batteries. Take out the rechargeable batteries and charge them over a AA battery charger. Change Magic Mouse batteries - Apple Support (CA)
