You will erase your iPhone by following the directions. Assuming you've been regularly backing up your iPhone, once erased, you can restore the phone from backup.
At a minimum you should write down important passwords in a notebook, kept somewhere safe for future recall, so you don't have to go through this again.

If you sync contacts with iCloud, they are saved on iCloud for you and can be redownloaded to your iPhone after you get back in. To know if you were syncing with iCloud, go to your web browser on a computer. Go to: www.icloud.com
If you synced contacts, they'll be there. If you didn't sync contacts, nor backup your iPhone, your data is gone and there is nowhere to get it back from. The time to ensure no loss of data is before catastrophe occurs.
