Mail messages in preview pane are transversed

The first two mail messages in Mail's Inbox folder are frequently transversed in the Mail window pane.

For context, I have three columns in my Mail application:

  1. Column 1 is the list of all my mailbox folders. Some are preset by Apple (e.g., Inbox, Sent, Draft, etc.), and others are custom based on rules I have established, e.g., "Dog."
  2. Column 2 is the list of messages in a specific folder. The list preview is set to 5 lines.
  3. Column 3 is a "window pane" to read a specific message, or a thread, once a message is clicked on.

In my case, and always in my preset Inbox folder, the first two messages in Column 2 are transversed in Column 3. For example, clicking on message 1 shows message 2 in the pane, and vice versa. It always happens with the first two messages and always occurs in Inbox. I do not use Column Layout.

All my OS and software upgrades are current. Using Ventura. This challenge has been longstanding for over a year, so I don't think it's a result of an OS change.

More of an inconvenience than anything else. Still, I am unaccustomed to Apple software not working properly.

Any ideas on how to cure?

—You can try quitting Mail relaunch it holding the Shift key down— and compare your results.

—You can try rebuild the mailbox that has an issue—
