Hello happy2290,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. We want to help troubleshot and isolate this issue you're experiencing with the Messages app. Let's start off by following the steps listed below:

1.) Close the Messages app: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

2.) Try refreshing things by restarting your iPhone: Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

3.) Make sure that all pending updates have been installed on your iPhone. This can usually help with unique issues, since updates include fixes. Just in case, this link can guide you through the update process: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

1.)Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
2.)Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
3.)Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
4.) If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
5.) Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do: If you forgot your iPhone passcode - Apple Support

Additionally, you might want to check if your Apple ID is signed in on another device. If you're signed in on another device and syncing your messages with iCloud, anything typed on the other device will populate on your iPhone as well: Check your Apple ID device list to find where you're signed in - Apple Support

We hope this helps you. Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

When you enable iMessage and FaceTime your phone manages those services with periodic text messages to an Apple server in the UK (Country code +44). Carriers that participate with Apple don’t charge for these, and they won’t even appear in your text message lists. Carriers that are not Apple partners will both show these and may charge for them.
