Time Machine Restore To New iMac - Restore everything or less system files?

I have a newer imac and want to take everything from my old system to my new system. However, they are on different operating systems and I dont want to mess up the new one. Too many files to select individually but in short I want everything, passwords, photos, documents etc. Old system running Catalina, newer one running Monterey. I have icloud and a time machine backup but the time machine backup (from fresh clean backup) is showing more than twice the amount shown on icloud so I'm wary I've got it copying everything on icloud.

I've looked at vids and they seem to concentrate on a complete re-install or a couple of files only. Any assistance appreciated!

Do you have a Time Machine backup of your old Mac? If so plug it in to the new Mac and start the setup process. You'll get to the Migration Assistant and select the TM as the source for migrating all of your user data, settings, etc. The System is not touched.

Hi - Yes I do. Its rather a large backup at 850gb (not sure why its quite so big as its a fresh backup and has only a couple of days incremental on it) so I'll give that a go and see what it actually takes. I didnt want it setting up my new system with Catalina so good to hear that is unaffected. I had one disaster using migration assistant via wifi, I stopped it after a couple of hours and then restarted it on ethernet - much faster but it failed on space issues. The wi-fi method was only 8mbps vs 60 on ethernet - it was to take several days it said.

Thanks for your input
