I have cerebral palsy and I can text my mom on my iPad. If I got an Apple Watch would I be able to text her. I can’t hold a phone up to my ear. Do I need an apple phone in order for an Apple Watch to work?

I have cerebral palsy and text my mom from my iPad. I can’t hold a phone up to my ear. Could I text her from an Apple Watch? If I got an Apple Watch would I also need an Apple phone for it to work? I also can’t hit the buttons on an Apple Watch. Could I use it just with my voice like I do with Siri with my iPad?

You either need an iPhone, ...

...Or you must be treated like a depended child, and use the Apple Watch Family Plan where a parent's iPhone controls your Apple Watch.

You can do things like:

  • Raise your Apple Watch arm
  • Then say: "Hey Siri, message Mom"
  • Siri will ask what you want to say.
  • You respond with your brief message, with no pauses, else Siri will think you are done.

Assumes "Mom" is listed in your contacts

NOTE: If you are using the Apple Watch Family Plan, this is Apple's iMessage, not traditional TEXT/MMS. So the other person needs to have an iPhone. If you have your iPhone, then the Apple Watch will relay TEXT/MMS messages via your iPhone, as long as your iPhone is accessible via Bluetooth, WiFi, or the Internet.

As for phone calls, you can just hold your Apple Watch around mid-chest level and basically use it as a speaker phone.

It would be best if you can go to an Apple Store and get a demo of the things you need the Apple Watch to do, so you know if it is worth it for you. Or if you have a friend/family member that already has an Apple Watch, work with them to make sure you can do what you need before buying.
