Contacts issue with assigning contacts to lists

I cannot create new contacts from with-in a sub-list. I have to enter them in my "All Contacts" first, then move them to the list I want. If I quit Contacts and restart the app, I can then create new contacts directly in the list I want them in. Within the list, I choose New Contact, start to type the name, and the entry stops when I try to enter the last name or the Company. Sometimes it stops in the middle of the last name, but when it stops, it does put the entry in my All Contacts list. I can then find it, edit it as needed, click Done, and then move it to the list I want.

I don't understand why works correctly when the app is just started, but if it has been open for a while (days), it will not let me enter the new contact directly in the list.

I'm running Ventura 13.4.1, and keep the iMac updated as needed.
