Why did my SE die after a swim?

I own an Apple Watch SE, purchased in January 2022.

I’ve swam with it approx. 4 times since then. Leisure swims in shallow water.

Yesterday, I hung out for approx. 35 minutes in around 3 feet of water at our local beach with my spouse & son. The watch began trying to make emergency calls, then kept powering on and off before dying.

It’s now completely fried.

Apple says it’s water resistant up to 50m. It also advertises it as a watch you can swim with on their product page. Stating “splashing, swimming or surfing, water’s fine.”

I called Apple and a CSR essentially told me that using it in water is “at your own risk.” Since it’s out of warranty, I was told I’d need to replace it on my own.

I’m extremely confused. Why is it advertised as swim suitable when it isn’t?

It is likely that you damaged the watch at some point in the year and a half that you've had it and that compromised the water resistant seals in the watch.
