So, I went chasing fish with my iPhone 12 Pro Max …

Yesterday, I went to one of our local lakes with a very good visibility in order to do some freediving and stuff. We took one of those rustic rowing boats, paddled to the other side of the lake, and jumped inside at the shoreline, where the water wasn‘t as deep, and where you could see fish swarming around dead old trees lying in the water. It looked pretty **** fascinating.

Anyway, so we paddled out there and I had the brilliant thought, „Oh, you know what, my iPhone is waterproof!“ And so, I held it into the water, to test the view and video quality … and than it happened … I was fascinated by the results. One thing lead to another, and I had my iPhone clutched between my fingers the whole four hours we were out on, as well as in the lake. I didn‘t go further than five meters deep, and the iPhone worked good till the end of our small trip. However, when I got home, I noticed that the touchscreen was a bit unresponsive, and twelve hours later - I had just woken up - I noticed that the screen was flickering with a green tint.

Obviously, I got worried. I‘m a student, and I paid over EUR 1200,- for this phone just two and a half years ago. At the same time, I‘m the idiot, who thought it wise to go diving with it, just ‘cause someone (Apple) said ‘IP68‘.

It‘s been around 30 hours since it was last submerged in the water, and for the most part of my last 12 hour shift it didn‘t flicker once. So, for a moment I thought that some of its “antibodies“ might have eliminated all the moisture and cured it, but nah … it‘s flickering again and the touch screen is not always responding properly. Gaming is the worst, and reading could give you epilepsy, because of its intense flickering at times.

Now, to my big questions: What can I do to fix this nuisance, other than paying full price for a new one, with money I don‘t have, and how much could this cost me. I was aiming on waiting till the iPhone 18 or something, to get a new one … not the iPhone 14. I just dislike the number 14, though I do love this dark lavender color. But the price! Oh, whomever atheists pray to, help me please.

About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later - Apple Support

To prevent liquid damage, avoid these:

  • Swimming or bathing with your iPhone
  • Exposing your iPhone to pressurized water or high velocity water, such as when showering, water skiing, wake boarding, surfing, jet skiing, and so on
  • Using your iPhone in a sauna or steam room
  • Intentionally submerging your iPhone in water
  • Operating your iPhone outside the suggested temperature ranges or in extremely humid conditions
  • Dropping your iPhone or subjecting it to other impacts
  • Disassembling your iPhone, including removing screws

No iphone is waterproof and nowhere does Apple say they are.

Water damage is not covered by any warranty.

Once you destroyed your phone by submerging it in water, your only option became buy a new phone.

I do get that. Thank you for giving it to me straight!

However, speaking in technical terms, and I‘m no expert there, but I do believe that IP68 means ‘dust- and waterproof‘. However, it is not guaranteed … which is this standard clause they have to add, to not get sued for a couple million of apples, because some idiot (like me) goes around diving with his iPhone and ends up drowning it after all.

Well, looking at that list, it was about time it finally gave up.

Thank you for your answer! Again, I think IP68 sounds misleading in a way, where tech-noobs like me, think it might actually go well.

I did throw it into the ocean before. I did take it with me into the Japanese onsen (hot bath). I did have it with me when photographing waterfalls and stuff. It went through a lot, tbh, but I should have known better … Rest in peace, my darling iPhone.
