Recommend device for HomePod
IPad is no longer supported as a HomePod. What other device do you recommend if I don’t have Apple TV?

You mean home hub, and this is a consequence of Upgrading to the new Home architecture - Apple Support. The process cannot be undone. You would need an Apple TV 4K, HomePod or HomePod mini to take over home hub duties. iOS devices need to be running iOS 16, and if you want to use the Home app on a Mac it needs to be running macOS 13 Ventura.
