  1. Try your Apple ID password: If you have an Apple ID associated with your MacBook Air, try using your Apple ID password as the old password. In some cases, the system may be asking for your Apple ID password instead of your device password.
  2. Reset your user account password: If the previous method doesn't work, you can reset your user account password by booting into the recovery mode. Here's how you can do it:
  3. a. Shut down your MacBook Air.
  4. b. Press the power button to turn it on, and immediately hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys together until you see the Apple logo or a spinning globe.
  5. c. Release the keys when you see the macOS Utilities window.
  6. d. Select "Utilities" from the menu bar, and then choose "Terminal."
  7. e. In the Terminal window, type the following command and press Enter: resetpassword
  8. f. A Reset Password window will appear. Follow the instructions to create a new password for your user account.
  9. g. Once you've set a new password, restart your MacBook Air and try using the new password to update the software.
