Good day to you hilkka,

Here’s how to make sure subtitles for videos in the Apple TV app are enabled. Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app or iTunes Store

Subtitles on Apple TV, smart TV, or streaming device

1. On a Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote, press the Play/Pause button while watching a video to bring up the playback controls. Or on a remote for a smart TV, streaming device, or game console, press the button that brings up the video timeline.
2. Use your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote to swipe up and select the Subtitles button. Or use your smart TV, streaming device, or game console remote to navigate to the Subtitles button.
3. Choose the subtitles that you want.

To change the default subtitles language in Settings, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Audio > Subtitle Language, then choose the language that you want. If you don't want automatic subtitles and you're using an Apple TV, go to Settings > Video and Audio, then turn off Automatic Subtitles. If you're using a smart TV or streaming device, go to Settings > General, then turn off Automatic Subtitles.

Thanks.

Hello hilkka,

Restarting your devices is a simple step that can resolve many unexpected behaviors. Have you tried to restart your Roku as well? Here's how:

How to system restart or factory reset your Roku streaming device

Also, try the following steps:

* Verify the caption settings: Ensure that the closed caption settings are configured correctly on your Roku device. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions mode on your Roku device and verify that the "Captions mode" is set to "On always."

Closed caption not working

Let us know the results. Kind regards.

Not helpful... canned answer just assumes I don;t know how to use my system. This stopped working. There is only OFF selection which can be clicked at for subtitles, nothing else. And once I click on that it stays CHECKED now matter how many times I click on it to TURN it back on.

I don't see the subtitle selections I used to see: ON/OFF/ON REPLAY. And subtitles are not showing even if OFF is deselected.

This started without me changing anything, just quit working. Tried to reload/restart everything I could imagine is related to this app starting with my modem.

I expected better from Apple

I explained I have powered off, restarted and even reloaded the app and of course I have the captions set ON always in my Roku.

I know how to use my devices.

This is a problem that STOPPED working a few days ago without any changes in my systems by me.

I contacted apple TV support via CHAT: she told me that subtitles are not working TEMPORARILY but hearing impared closed captions are... how do I set those ON?
