Maps app goes dark

As mentioned in the article previously shared this is expected behavior depending on your settings. From the previous article shared:

"When Driving Focus is turned on, or if iPhone locks automatically, Maps remains onscreen and continues to speak directions. Even if you open another app, you continue to receive turn-by-turn directions. (To return to Maps from another app, tap the directions banner at the top of the screen or the navigation indicator in the status bar.)"

However, you can keep your iPhone connected to power to see if the display stays on. If you prefer not to connect to power, change your iPhone lock settings by navigating to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, then choose a length of time. As mentioned in this article above " If you need the display to stay on longer (for example, when you’re navigating with Maps), you can change how long it takes iPhone to automatically dim and lock"

I got the same issue on my google map or apple map. When driving it will go dark and sleep but luckily the car play screen is still work. I have to set my phone screen lock time to "never" before I start driving. Otherwise it would cause dangerous when I have to wake it up again.

We'll be happy to help out with your Maps issue. To start, are you unlocking the phone before starting your trip? Or just using Siri or similar to start navigation with your phone locked?

If the latter, try unlocking your phone and opening the Maps app manually. That should cause it to stay on for the duration of the trip while Maps is in use.

Problem solved (unsatisfactory way). It turns out that, for me at least, rebooting the iPhone solves the problem. I’ve tried out 3-4 times now and it has a perfect success rate. However, to me this implies a pretty big and long lasting bug.

Same issue. This started a few OS updated ago (2023 I think). It looks just like it would for any other app. Something broke

Always open the map app to set trip. Used to stay on for the duration. Now keeps going dark. Not sure rebooting before each use is the best answer. Got something more definitive?
