Google maps is causing severe battery drain

Google maps has always been a real battery hog over the years. However for the past two or three years I don't remember it being anywhere near as bad as it is on my brand new phone. It's really on a whole new level. Using it to navigate (and without notifications turned on) was using up something like 1% per minute. Is there any way to resolve this? Is this just a google bug? Does anyone else experience the same?
