I am unable to open my mail or close down my computer because I get a message that my mail is open. How can I view my messages when the folder won't open and I can't shut down my computer?

Use/run “”Activity Monitor”( should be in your Utilities Folder) with it, you can Force Quit everything( including the Finder, as needed) do you have an Intel or m1/m2 ( Apple Silicon) MacBook Pro?

Thank you for your advice. I was able to do a "Force Quit" and now everything appears to be working. 👍🏻
I usually see that when I first add an account (or replace an account) to the mail app. depending on how much is on the server, it can take quite a while for all the folders and emails to populate into the mail app. you cannot close the app while the transfer is taking place. did you recently set it up? or add a new account?

My mail icon has a black dot underneath showing it is in use. l am unable to open the mail to view messages. I am unable to close the mail application. When I try to shut down, I get a message that I cannot shut down because my mail is open.
